Mandela leaves a profit for city T-shirt sellers

Mandela’s death has touched not only the hearts of Nairobians but also changed their fortunes. City boutiques have made good profits from the sale of T-shirts branded with the portrait of the former South African President Nelson Mandela. The demand for the T-shirts shot up following the announcement of his death on December 6. Many boutiques were by the eve of Jamhuri Day out of stock, according to Rose Muiya, a boutique owner in the city. Initially, the T-shirts sold for between Sh500 and Sh800 at her shop on Tom Mboya Street but high demand forced her to charge Sh1,000. Traders in Muthurwa and other city markets have reported a rise in demand for the Mandela T-shirts following his death.-www.standardmedia.co.ke

Is Sonko a Senator or socialite? Furious Kenyans ask

Mike Sonko has come under fire on social media for “embarrassing” Kenya to the world. The Nairobi senator was once again embroiled in a tasteless quest for publicity that backfired on him, and this time round, the international media outlets have picked the story, and they have no kind words for Sonko. The UK’s Independent was the first to report that Sonko had uploaded a photo of himself in the arms of an aging but still spry Mandela to his personal Facebook page immediately after his death. There was no problem with the post except that the picture was “a badly photoshopped image” of him with Mandela. UK papers lampooned Sonko for allegedly deleting the original image of another global figure – famed boxer Muhammad Ali – to place himself next to Mandela hugging him with the use of Photoshop software. Responses across social networks varied from branding him an “attention w***e” to the most basic “ugh”, with one asking, “What are you? A senator or a socialite?”  This was followed by dozen of other posts supporting this view. Syd Embenzi, said: “Grossly pathetic, can’t have any child look up to him as a role model.” On Jamhuri Day’s eve Sonko was set to receive one of the highest presidential award in Kenya. The senator had been nominated for the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS).

SHOCKING: Man locked in cage for over 40 years

A Chinese man has been locked in a cage for more than 40 years by his mother. Peng Weiqing, 48, has been in the cage in his mother's home in the city of Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, since he was six.
As a baby, Weiqing suffered brain damage following a fever. He then begun suffering severe epilectic fits at the age of six. His mother, Peng Waimei, says she has kept him locked in the cage since then in order to protect him. Fearing that he would hurt himself and unable to afford medical treatment, Waimei's husband built a series of cages that got bigger as Weiqing grew. Waimei said: "He can't control himself. "When he was young, quite often he would cut himself with a knife and glass debris. "Even when walking, he could suddenly fall down and hit his face and make it bleed. "He must know me, although he may not know the meaning of "mother". He is my 48-year-old child." Aged 80 and with her husband now dead, Waimei fears for her son when she dies and hopes to find someone to take care of him.
