Mandela’s death has touched not only the hearts of Nairobians but also changed their fortunes. City boutiques have made good profits from the sale of T-shirts branded with the portrait of the former South African President Nelson Mandela. The demand for the T-shirts shot up following the announcement of his death on December 6. Many boutiques were by the eve of Jamhuri Day out of stock, according to Rose Muiya, a boutique owner in the city. Initially, the T-shirts sold for between Sh500 and Sh800 at her shop on Tom Mboya Street but high demand forced her to charge Sh1,000. Traders in Muthurwa and other city markets have reported a rise in demand for the Mandela T-shirts following his death.-www.standardmedia.co.ke
