Mike Sonko has come under fire on social media for “embarrassing” Kenya to the world. The Nairobi senator was once again embroiled in a tasteless quest for publicity that backfired on him, and this time round, the international media outlets have picked the story, and they have no kind words for Sonko. The UK’s Independent was the first to report that Sonko had uploaded a photo of himself in the arms of an aging but still spry Mandela to his personal Facebook page immediately after his death. There was no problem with the post except that the picture was “a badly photoshopped image” of him with Mandela. UK papers lampooned Sonko for allegedly deleting the original image of another global figure – famed boxer Muhammad Ali – to place himself next to Mandela hugging him with the use of Photoshop software. Responses across social networks varied from branding him an “attention w***e” to the most basic “ugh”, with one asking, “What are you? A senator or a socialite?” This was followed by dozen of other posts supporting this view. Syd Embenzi, said: “Grossly pathetic, can’t have any child look up to him as a role model.” On Jamhuri Day’s eve Sonko was set to receive one of the highest presidential award in Kenya. The senator had been nominated for the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS).
